Even though I try to eat healthy all the time, I visited a nutritionist a few months ago. It is always good to hear from a professional what we should and shouldn’t eat. I’m not a “sweet tooth” kind of person, but sometimes I do crave for something sweet. Good news! Things like cookies and cakes have a place in our overall diet, of course, they have to be eaten in moderation.
Some foods that we really have to try our best to stay away from are:
Processed Canned Meat or Cheese, they have additional thickeners, preservatives, sugar and high content of preservatives, and think about it, if animal products have to sit on a shelf for days, it will have to require a decent amount of processing to protect against all the bacteria that might growth in them. Just to think about it make me go ewww! So we are basically eating fake food. I’d rather go for a fresh version, don’t you?
I don’t drink coffee, but she mentioned to me the non-dairy creamers, she said that they have no nutrient of any kind, and they can increase your risk of heart disease. I checked with my dad who is a Cardiologist and he said: “those creamers are full of sugar, so they might affect your Heart or at least increase the risk”. A Nutritionist and a Cardiologist are telling us “try to avoid them” I think we should listen to them.
Here is a good one, the controversial GMOs, (Genetically Modified Organisms), these ones include plants or animals that were created through genetic engineering. A merger of DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, and bacteria genes that cannot occur in traditional crossbreeding. Sounds too complicated for me… let’s keep it organic for now ha!
Diet Sodas are a no-no… every time we see “Diet” we think fewer calories, less sugar right? Unfortunately the sweet taste comes with sugar cravings and can increase the calorie intake throughout the day, and won’t help you to avoid the extra calories in the long run. Same thing with regular Sodas. They are literally liquid candy, so try to stay away from both. Green Tea for me please…
Cold Cereal and Fat-Free Dairy, she said that cold cereals are loaded with added sugars with no protein and/or fiber, which are the main reason we eat them, me at least. And when you have them for breakfast, you are just eating empty calories, you will be hungry and on a sugar crash within a few hours, look for the ones that have fiber and protein. Fat is a super important part of each meal, don’t go fat-free, just pick a good quality one and get the nutrients from it.
Fluorescent Orange Crunchy Snacks, chemicals and more chemicals, she said: “they are orange! Where do you think that color comes from?” well it comes from chemicals, salt, and artificial color. Just steer clear from them.
I remember that when I was little, I used to love the Maraschino Cherries, but since I found out what they were I never ate them again. They lose all the health benefits of the naturally fruit when they add all the sugar, chemicals and artificial dyes to them. I know we all thought they were good, but nope!
It is so hard sometimes to stay healthy, but as soon as you get on that train it gets a lot easier, I promise.
Have a great weekend and Good luck to all my friends running the Chicago Marathon this Sunday, this time, I’ll be waiting at the finish line.

Love this post! I’m so passionate about eating whole foods and trying my best to stay away from all of the processed junk you mentioned above. Even those Maraschino cherries, I love them too! But I save them for my once a year milkshake haha. It has great information that I think the general population needs to learn more about 🙂
